2024 was a year of many small, everyday blessings and a few major changes. At the start of the year, tree surgeons had cut down an enormous yew tree at the end of the road and when Marc asked them what they would do with all the wood, they answered that they’d have to truck it away in various loads. Well, instead, they dumped at least 2 tipper loads in front of our house, sorting us out with free firewood for about 2 years! Though it meant Marc had to build yet another (5th) woodstore!

The three of us (Marc, Riannah & Simone) went to a pottery workshop where we each made a beautiful lantern – it had been Simone’s christmas present to the family in 2023.

Marc and Simone made 2 trips to London to the Jamaican High Commission so that Simone can get her Jamaican citizenship and passport. Jamaican bureaucracy seems to be even more meticulous than in Germany! But also incredibly arbitrary (Hence the need to come back a 2nd time, with exactly the same documents…) and inefficient. Simone is still waiting for her passport! But the trips afforded us a nice opportunity to meet up with Nik and Dot in London, and to see Nik’s mum Nevena – sadly for the last time as she died later in the year.

Speaking of Jamaica – another nice and spontaneous surprise was that we were able to catch up with First Man. He is an elder in a Rastafarian village we met on our last trip to Jamaica two years ago. He came to Wales to lead on a cultural exchange project with the Caribbean people living here.

Another nice catching up early in the year was with Henning and Julia Scherf – Caroline’s dad and sister who came to visit to hear Caroline perform in Händel’s Messiah.

Riannah continues to have stints in modelling and acting, with several engagements at one of her favourite TV shows Doctor Who – you can see her here in the background with the read top. And only 1 year late, Stanwell School held a ceremony for her A level certificate. In other news, she is now entering the world of business in a startup that combines perfume with AI.

The summer saw us going to various wonderful outdoor art or music events in our surroundings. The highlight of that was the Green Gathering, an annual alternative off-grid Festival where Simone made a beautiful copper leaf pendant.

And after a few years break, we had a summer party again and were thrilled that Anja came to visit us just for that!
Didn’t we speak about an abundance of firewood earlier? Well, after we had solar panels installed on our roof, we decided it was time to cut down a rather unattractive (and actually recently deceased) leylandii at the side of the house as it was shading the panels. Marc’s friend Stuart (actually, no longer Stuart, but now called Candrapriya, more on that later) kindly lent his expertise yet again.

Where there is death, there is life. The pond in the garden continues to thrive and we were thrilled to discover that several newts made their home there.
September saw Marc go off for a month to a remote retreat centre called Guhyaloka hidden in the mountains off the Coast Blanca in Spain. After a spiritual journey that started about 10 years ago, Marc was ordained into the Triratna Buddhist Order and was given the new name Jñānadāsa (pronounced Nyah-na-dah-sa). It is Sanskrit and means “Servant of Knowledge”. What does ordination mean you ask? Are you a monk now? It means that Jñānadāsa has made a commitment to put practicing the Dharma (the teaching of the Buddha) and ethics at the centre of his life, that whatever he does in the context of work, family, leisure, and personal growth, he endeavours to remain mindful and compassionate without taking himself too seriously. The picture shows him with his public and private preceptors Mahamati and Padmasimha.

Sadly, towards the end of the year another death: Jñānadāsa’s uncle and godfather Maxi passed away. Although the occasion was sad, it was nonetheless nice to catch up with relatives that he hadn’t seen in a long time (here his auntie Roswitha). And an unexpected bonus was that it enabled him to see a performance of “King David” – a musical production at his parents’ church, and for which his dad had made pretty much all the scenery and props as well as lending directorial assistance.

Was bedeutet Ordination?

We wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year 2025 !
Wir wünschen Euch Frohe Weihnachten und alles Gute für das Neue Jahr 2025!
